The cupola

Since May 2011 the roof of the Haus der Wissenschaft is decorated with a glass cupola.

The eight-ton heavy construction out of steel and glass was lifted onto the roof of the 42-metres high house in one piece. The segmented steel-beam construction was designed by O.M. Architects and has the shape of an ellipsoid.

The cupola took the place of the former observatory from 1937.

The steel-beam construction was arranged on the patio’s ground. The cupola’s diameter amounts to 5.5 meter. The crown height accounts for 5 meters.

Coronation

Due to the heavy weight and the height, a 130-ton heavy crane that can raise up to 200 tons and has a pan radius of 30 meters, was needed to ‘crown’ the building.
